William H. Salisbury is one of the most prominent trial lawyers in Mitchell county at the time this history is written. He was born in the county, on a farm near Stacyville, May 29, 1869. His line of descent is English on his father's side, and French-Huguenot on his mother's side.

He had the experience of a great many country boys of this time in the middle west. He worked hard on the farm, attended country school and taught in the same for several terms. Then he became a student in the college at Fayette for about two years. His means, however, gave out and he again took up a teacher's calling. In 1897 he was elected county superintendent of this county, to succeed R. C. Barrett when he became state superintendent. He was reelected, and held this office nearly three years. During that time he studied law in the offices of Sweney & Lovejoy and W. L. Eaton. In May, 1910, he passed the state bar examination at Des Moines and was admitted to practice. He immediately resigned the superintendency and formed a law partnership with Mr. Eaton, under the name of Eaton & Salisbury. This partnership continued until it was terminated by the death of Mr. Eaton, June 7, 1911. Since that time Mr. Salisbury has practiced by himself at the old office.

Mr. Salisbury was married to Miss Mary E. Haight, April 25, 1907. He has not sought nor held public office since he began the practice of law, but has devoted his energies strictly to his business. He is industrious and aggressive in his practice, and is considered a hard man to beat in the trial of cases. He has a large and lucrative practice, and helps to settle many controversies without trial.
