Wanders, Hazel A. (Van Hemert) 1916-2009

Hazel Ann Van Hemert was born on April 8, 1916, in Mahaska County near Leighton, Iowa. She was one of three daughters that were born to Mars and Eva Bieshaar Van Hemert.

Hazel attended country grade school and graduated from Pella Public High School in Pella, Iowa with the Class of 1933. Following her graduation she worked at the Rolscreen Company in Pella making blinds.

On June 14, 1938, she was united in marriage with Albert Allen Wanders, a son of Albert and Bertha Van Donselaar Wanders, Sr., at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born: Diane Joyce, Marsha Rae and Cynthia Sue.

Al and Hazel made their home on a farm 3 miles southeast of Pella where they lived all their married lifetime. Al was the owner and operator of Wanders Radio & TV and Hazel assisted him in the operation of the business.

Al passed away on September 1, 1985, at the age of 76 years.

Following his death Hazel continued living on the farm place where she enjoyed the outdoors, raising flowers, and in particular mowing the large lawn. She was a very compassionate person who never wanted to be a bother to anyone, always concerned that other people were fed, and very servant minded. She was always willing and ready to take care of other people. Hazel was able to remain in her home until July of 2007 when she became a resident at Jefferson Place in Pella, Iowa.

Hazel passed away early Wednesday morning, December 3, 2008, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella at the advanced age of 92 years, 7 months and 24 days.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. They and their families are:(Diane J. Plate); Marsha R. and Charles Veldhuizen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Cynthia S. and Robert Newendorp of Pella, Iowa.

Hazel was the last surviving member of her original family and leaves one sister-in-law, Marie (Wanders) Nollen of Pella.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Wanders, her daughter, Diane J. Plate, who passed away in 1999 at the age of just 57 years; a grandson, Eric Veldhuizen who died in infancy in 1967; her parents, Mars and Eva Van Hemert; her parents-in-law, Albert and Bertha Wanders, Sr.; a sister who died in infancy; her sister, Irma and her husband, Leonard Sents; a brother-in-law, Lewis Wanders; two sisters-in-law: Grace (Wanders) and her husband, Gerrit Vande Kieft, Katharine (Wanders) and her husband, M.S. Standage; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Nollen.

At the time of her death, Hazel was a faithful member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery at Pella, Iowa
