Gary David Hauenstein, 57, of Tracy / Harvey, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at CoalRidge Community Church & Museum with Rev. Dr. Dennis E. Morey officiating. Services will conclude at the church.

Gary was born on October 12, 1952, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Jack and Shirley (Sonderegger) Hauenstein. Gary spent his childhood in Ohio. As a young man, Gary earned a bachelors degree and pursued a masters in mathematics at the University of Akron. He began his career at National Computer Systems in Iowa City where he performed statistical analysis for the Department of Education.

Gary’s family originated in Iowa where they owned a multi-generational farm near Tracy. After his parent’s passing, Gary managed the family farm while being employed at the Pella Corporation.

Gary’s main passion in life was his love of music. From an early age, Gary was a singer, songwriter with volumes of eloquent works. Gary was a philosopher and dreamer whose kind heart touched many with compassion.

Gary is survived by his life partner, Loretta Watson of Harvey, IA; sister, Mary “Mimi” Hardesty and her husband David of Baltimore, MD; brother, Dale Hauenstein and wife Catherine of Gurnee, IL; two step children, Andrea Becker and Laurie Collins; three nieces, Kelly Hardesty, Emily Hauenstein, and Marie Hauenstein; and three nephews, Doug Hardesty, Daniel Hauenstein, and Andrew Hauenstein. Gary was devoted to Loretta’s five grandchildren, Hannah, Nicholas, Benjamin, Kennedy and Griffin.
