Jerry Lee Matthews was born on June 12, 1939 in Mexia, Texas, the son of Ira Lee Matthews and Bessie Mae (Thompson) Matthews.

Jerry grew up in Texas and enlisted in the United States Navy on October 17, 1962 in Dallas, Texas. He was later honorably discharged on October 14, 1968 in Long Beach, California.

Following a lengthy telephone courtship, Jerry was united in marriage to Carolin (Galvin) on February 13, 1982 in Pleasantville, Iowa.

Jerry worked for United Airlines in Moore Park, California for 32 years before retiring and moving to Pleasantville with Carolin.

Western music, books and movies were things that Jerry enjoyed. He also loved to watch any sort of Texas sport on the TV especially football and baseball, which he and Carolin enjoyed together. Jerry always said that now that he had found Carolin, he finally had someone to watch sports with. Spending time with his family, including the grandchildren was very special to Jerry.

Jerry passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2009at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 5 days.

He was preceded in death by his father, and his first wife, Anna.

Survivors include his wife, Carolin; children, Jim (Sallie) Matthews of Granada Hills, CA, Sandra (Michael) Stein of Pasadena, CA; step-children, Judy (Randy) Brisel of Newton, Jim (Bobbi) Williams of Greenfield, Janet (Bill) Kloewer of Johnston; 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; mother, Bessie Mae Matthews and sister, Judy (Raymond) Lipsey all of Mexia, TX along with other relatives and many friends.
