Burnham, Doris (Williams) 1912-2009

Doris (Williams) Burnham was born near Pleasantville on July 23, 1912, to Charles and Edna (Metcalf) Williams.

Doris attended West Pella School located northeast of Pleasantville through the eighth grade and transferred to Pleasantville High School.

Doris attended Sunday School at the Pleasantville Christian Church. In her teen years she helped with the younger children’s classes and attended Endeavor on Sunday evenings. She was baptized at the age of 14. In later years she enjoyed assisting with CWF meals, especially serving homemade pies.

Doris was united in marriage to Arlie Burnham on February 21, 1933, in Marceline, Missouri. They located on a farm west of Pleasantville. To this union a daughter, Beverly Kay, was born on April 5, 1941. Arlie and Doris were fortunate to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and have 53 years together.

Doris loved music, especially religious hymns and country music. She liked to cook and in her spare time tried new recipes. Her family was always invited for Sunday dinner to enjoy fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy or roast beef with mashed potatoes and homemade noodles. Even in her later years, Doris loved to make pies, angel food cakes from scratch, cinnamon rolls, and homemade noodles. She always made a birthday cake for her grandchildren.

Doris passed away on June 21, 2009, at the age of 96 years, 10 months, and 29 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers (Harold and Dwight), and sister (Geraldine).

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Beverly (Douglas) Woodside; two grandchildren, Bryan (Beth) Woodside of Altoona, and Kayla (Jim) Kiesey of Long Grove; great-grandchildren, Eliza and Logan Woodside and Dylan and Darek Kiesey; one brother, Gene (Wanda) Williams; sister-in-law, Opal (Delmar) Summy; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was a loving and caring person and will be greatly missed by her family.
