Leonard Lawry Jones was born October 6, 1922 in rural Marion County, Iowa the son of John and Tressa (Shilling) Jones.

He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Tracy High School in 1941. Shortly after graduation he entered the United States Army, during World War II. He was involved in 5 major battles, including the D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge.

Following his honorable discharge, Leonard returned home and met his future wife, Frances M. Jenkins. On March 3, 1948 they were united in marriage, and to this union 5 children were born. Leonard delivered milk in Knoxville and surrounding communities until his retirement.

He also worked the pit gate at the Knoxville Raceway for many years and worked at Darnell’s DX, where he enjoyed visiting with and helping people. In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed gardening, and at one time he maintained four gardens. He and Frances also enjoyed camping with friends and family and dancing at the Moose Lodge in Newton.

He loved going to coffee time at Mr. C’s and helping his brother-in-law on the farm. He was very proud of his family and closely followed all of his grandkids’ sports and school activities and kept in touch with all the family through visits or phone calls.

Leonard passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital Emergency Room at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 14 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dennis John Jones on March 27, 2003; siblings, Lorraine Tillie, Lester Jones, Laverne Jones, Levi Jones and Louise Rankin.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Frances; daughter, Carolan Brooks (Charles); three sons, Ron, Mike (Lisa) and Steve (Carolyn), a daughter-in-law, Tanya Jones all of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren: Heidi Brooks of Indianola, Brian Brooks and his fiancé, Bre Pallardy; Seth, Josh, Eric and Sarah Jones; Pete & Cari Collins and Jessica Moon (Jeremy) all of Knoxville and AIC Shane Jones, serving in Japan; a great-granddaughter, Treasure; his siblings, Leona Jones, Lena Bankus, Lucretia Spaur and Lily Sterling (Richard) all of Knoxville and Louretta Redding of Oskaloosa and Luella Parker (Hubert) of Bussey, and many other family members and friends.
