Mabel Minda Lanphier was born January 16, 1925 in Pershing, Iowa. She was one of 10 children born to Maudie Mae Tulk and Samuel B. Barnhill. Mabel was raised by her grandmother, Arminda Elizabeth Tulk Barnhill. Mabel graduated from Tracy High School in 1943.

On March 9, 1943 Mabel was united in marriage to Robert Fred Lanphier. To this union six children were born.

The Mabel lived in the Tracy area most of her life. As a young adult Mabel cared for new mothers, babies and their family after a birth. Mabel also worked at the Overall Factory and Pella Corp for several years. Mabel was an excellent cook. The grandchildren say that ‘No body makes fried chicken and chocolate pie like Grandma.” Mabel always had a large garden and canned for her family. She enjoyed cross-stitching until her sight failed. Mabel took great pleasure in visiting with people either in person or on the phone.

Mabel Minda Lanphier passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Westridge Nursing Center at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 18 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, 1 son, 2 daughters, 1 sister and 3 brothers.

Those left to mourn her passing are three daughters and their husbands, Dixie and Don Roorda of Knoxville, Cherol and Steve Hamler of Knoxville and Pam and Dave Haugen of Tracy; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild to be born soon; 5 sisters, Rosie “Sis” Caswell of Westminster, CA, Sabra Lanphier of Knoxville, Gloria Mick and her husband, Harold of Albia, Barbara King and her husband, Junior, of Oskaloosa and Carol Barnhill of Des Moines; and 3 sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Barnhill of Ohio, Eleanor Barnhill of Albia and Patty Barnhill of Oskaloosa.

Funeral services were Wed. July 8, 2009 at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville with Rev. Larry Peterson officiating. Interment was in Bellefountaine Cemetery, rural Mahaska County, Iowa.

Musical selections were “Amazing Grace”, “Battle Hyumn of the Republic” and “In the Garden.” Ruth Ann Kuhn was the vocalist. Janet Westberg was the organist. Casket bearers were Eric Hamler, Mitch Haugen, Brad Roorda, Bryan Roorda, Don Roorda and Jeff Spencer. Honorary casket bearers were Andrew Burkland, Kyle Graves, Matthew Haugen and Chase Spencer.
