Goemaat, Violet L. (Monroe) 1916-2008

Violet Lucile Goemaat was born on December 3, 1916 in Marion County, Iowa. She was one of eight children born to Leona Rankin and Elzy B. Monroe. Lucile graduated from Knoxville High School in 1934. She graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in 1938. Nursing became a significant portion of Lucile’s life. She worked at Collins Hospital, Westridge Nursing Home, Pella Hospital and as a private duty nurse. Even after retirement, Lucile continued to work part-time.

On March 19, 1939 Violet Lucile Monroe was united in marriage to Lester Goemaat. To this union five children were born.

Lucile and Lester enjoyed traveling and camping. For nearly 30 years they wintered in Florida; usually in Tice. Lucile was a long time member of the Attica United Methodist Church.

Lucile was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, David; four sisters, Lorraine Swayne, Marilyn Woodard, Wilma Monroe and Wanda Monroe who died as a child.

Those left to mourn her passing are four children, Donald Goemaat and his wife, Marye of Knoxville, Jeanenne Davis and her husband, Archie of Hamilton, Larry Goemaat and his wife, Janet of Knoxville and Jeanette Myers and her husband, Dennis of Bussey; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 1 sister, Glenna Cobb of Iowa City; 2 brothers, Hoyt Monroe of Jefferson and Dwight Monroe and his wife, Phyllis of Bondurant; and 2 brothers-in-law, Roy Goemaat of Pella and Don Woodard of Florida.

Services were held on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Williams Funeral Home with Pastor Bud Lane officiating. Interment was in Gullion Cemetery, rural Marion County, Iowa. Musical selections were “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Garden.” Katie Davis was the vocalist. Marilyn Lane was the organist. Casket bearers were Don E. and Jay Davis, Jason and Jeremy Goemaat, and Brad and David Myers. Honorary casket bearers were Melinda Rowland, Mardell Sandstrom and Marcia Shives.
