Hanley, Emma Shilling – 1863-1954

Emma Shilling, daughter of Andrew and Mary Shilling, was born on a homestead, three miles north of Knoxville, July 25, 1863, and died at her home in this city, January 15, 1954. She was 90 years, 5 months and 21 days of age and had spent her entire life in Marion county.
On September 26, 1886, the deceased became the wife of James Hanley. To this union was born, one daughter, Mrs. Alta Menzies, who has made her home with her mother for several years. At her marriage she became the mother of Mr. Hanley’s six children giving them the same loving care as she bestowed upon her own.
In March 1894, Mrs. Hanley made the confession of faith in her Savior under the pastorate of W. B. Crowdson and was baptized into Christ in the old brick Christian church, and was faithful to the end. In May of the same year she became a member of the Rebekah lodge.
Mrs. Hanley was preceded in death by her husband, two step-sons, Fred and Henry Hanley, two step daughters, Mrs. Agnes Rexroth and Mrs. Ida Hurley. Those who survive are her daughter, Mrs. Alta Mepples of Knoxville; granddaughter Mrs. Margaret Jackson, of Des Moines; great grandson, Michael Rubel, of Knoxville; two step-daughters, Mrs. Emily Denery of Fort Dodge and Mrs. Ella Anderson, of St. Joseph, Mo.; also twelve step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, from the First Christian church conducted by Mr. Stanley L. Hunt. Interment was in Graceland cemetery.
