Shirley A. Parkins, 95, of Winterset, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024. Shirley lived a long, blessed life with family, friends, Democratic politics, and Madison County history.
Shirley Ann Greenwood was born on January 6, 1929, to James Merle and Mildred Florence (Stevens) Greenwood. She lived most of her formative years in Winterset, Iowa. She was joined in marriage to Burton Dale Parkins on December 29, 1947. Through that union, they welcomed two children, Thomas, and Susan.
During her long life, she lived in Des Moines, Iowa, Urbandale, Iowa, Washington Township, Michigan then returned to spend her retirement years in Winterset. Throughout her life, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, being an active member of the Pythian Sisters, Women’s Auxiliary, Women’s Democratic Organizations in her community, and working at the Madison County Historical Society.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Charles (Joan Roberts) Greenwood; sister, Nancy Mapes; sister-in-law, Jean Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Judy Parkins; grandchildren, Kelly (Andy) Grunhovd, Patrick (Kristin) Barber, Allie (Josh Ellenberg) Barber, Lisa Connor, and Marc Fitzgibbon; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Greenwood, Mildred Mapes, and stepfather, Dick Mapes; husband, Dale; children, Tom and Sue Parkins; brothers, James and Richard Greenwood; granddaughter, Casie Parkins; and two great-grandsons.
Per Shirley’s wishes, the family is not hosting a public service. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Madison County Historical Society at 815 S 2nd Avenue, Winterset, IA 50273.
