But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, - Galatians 1:15

Janina Lynn Alvarez “Nina,” passed away on January 11, 2024. Funeral services for Nina will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at New Bridge Church in Winterset, Iowa. Family will greet guests on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at New Bridge Church.

Determined to follow Jesus by being born on the day of Christmas, Nina arrived December 26, 2001. She weighed in at just over two pounds and was born three months early. God certainly set Nina apart since birth, putting Jesus and his word first.

She faced countless challenges that required a tracheostomy and having over one hundred medical procedures. She was a frequent flyer at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and most recently established care with the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in California.

Nina was lover of art, history, travel, sunsets, pastels (especially Pink!), iced chai, coffee, HUGS, writing and music. She orchestrated her life through journaling and often created daily prayer lists for her loved ones.

Persevering through adversity, she developed a strong work ethic finding comfort by being employed by Fareway in Winterset for over five years while providing care services for Vodec for the past year. Nina graduated from Winterset High School 2020 with college credits at Des Moines Area Community College. She wanted to pursue culinary skills and graphic design to follow her dream of one day owning a coffee shop/café.

Nina is survived by her parents, Laresa (Curtis Rickets) Carney and Angel Alvarez Jr.; her bonus dad, David Melchior; brothers Antonio (Liz) Alvarez and Jayden Carney; sisters, Alexis (Walker Miles) Alvarez and Jeneba Wanjah; grandparents, Angel (Cathy) Alvarez Sr. and Joseph Carney Sr.; special cousins, Carlee, Connor, Cole and Chloe Carney; nephew, Isaac Cannon; special aunt, Geneva Hawthorne-Helm; many cousins, aunts and uncles and Curtis’s sons Tyler and Clayton. Nina often considered her coworkers and fellow church members part of her family.

Nina had a tremendous love for her niece, Daisy Mae, and her one-eyed dog, Bella.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lola Valadez and Judy Carney; and her Godmother, Lacey Holtmyer.

I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course. I have kept the faith - 2 Timothy 4:7

Pray Smile Love – Nina
