Beverly Ellen (Gilman) Powell, 82 of Des Moines, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024 due to complications of heart disease and COVID.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2900 49th St, Des Moines. Visitation with family will be held at 10 am with a luncheon to follow the service.
Bev was born at home in rural Earlham, Madison County, Iowa on the family farm to Everett and Mabel Gilman. She grew up on the farm and attended the Penn Center Country school and graduated from Earlham High School.
Bev married the love of her life, J. Gordon Powell on April 1, 1960 and they celebrated 50 years together. They lived in Des Moines and were blessed with four children. Bev and Gordon were beekeepers and could be found each year working the Honey booth at the Iowa State Fair. Bev loved being a mother and homemaker and devoted her life to her family.
Bev was very creative, from decorating cakes to handwork. She loved to sew and was an excellent cook and baker. She made the best fried chicken. She loved to garden. She delighted in her grandchildren.
Bev is survived by her children, Linda Powell of Des Moines, Lori (Chas) Miller of Oxford, MI, Lisa Powell of Beatrice, NE, and Brian Powell of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Eleanor, Colin, Erik, Kyle and Sean and a sister, Patricia Greenwell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. Gordon Powell and brothers, Marlin and Roger Gilman.
