Don Chapman, age 66, of Murray, passed away July 23, 2023, at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.

A Memorial Service and Military Honors will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel, where a visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:30. Burial will be at a later date.

Don Chapman was born in Winterset, Iowa, May 19, 1957, the son of Don Chapman, Sr. and Velma Hubbard. He joined the Army in 1977 and was discharged as a staff sergeant in 1987. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, Germany, and Fort Benning, GA.

Don married Sally Long on June 24, 1978 in Perry, Iowa. Sally followed Don in his Army career, and they became the parents of two children, Don W. Chapman and Teresa J. Chapman.

After Don’s Army service, Don and Sally lived in Elgin, Illinois for 15 years. They then moved to Murray, Iowa, where Don bought a hobby farm. He loved working outside and raising miniature horses. In 2021, he bought a tractor and was like a kid in a candy store.

Don was a mechanic by trade and enjoyed working on his vehicles and helping his friends with theirs. Don worked with Sally’s dad at Randhurst Shopping Mall while they were in Illinois. He also worked at Prairie Materials Cement Company as a mechanic. The last job he had was a fuel truck driver for Agriland Farm Service.

Don retired in 2018, and really enjoyed his retirement. He liked to fish and loved taking trips to see his kids. He also enjoyed camping and visiting friends. He was looking forward to going on his first cruise with his wife. Don will be remembered as a good friend, who was always available to help people out, and as a good husband and father.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; his son, Don W. Chapman of Hinsdale, IL; his daughter, Teresa Chapman (Savannah Kramel) of St. Roberts, MO; brothers, Bill Chapman (Galynne) of DeSoto, Jerry Chapman of Adel, Ed Chapman (Joanne) of Norwalk, and Wilbur Chapman of Bagley.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Velma and a brother, Randy Chapman.
