My grandmother, Nina M. Phillips was born in Chariton on Apr. 12, 1867. She married Elmer A. Young (don’t have date or location) and had six children, the oldest, Leonard E. Young was born on Oct. 17, 1885 in Wyanet, IL., where they lived until about 1910. I have had no success finding her parents or anything about her. Things I overheard as a child (adults got upset when they realized I had overheard) suggest that she may have been illegitimate or adopted and some comments indicated she was treated badly by another family, perhaps her adoptive family. Are there records/sources available in Chariton that might shed some light? I would be happy to visit Chariton if it would be worthwhile (I live in Virginia). I would appreciate any thoughts you might have. Leonard Young.
