Jewell S. Helmick, 64, 351 20th St. NW died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics following a brief illness. Memorial Services: 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Roseann Hayck of St. Matthew's Catholic Church will officiate. Surviving in addition to his wife Betty are a son, Harmon "Wes" Helmick (Bonnie) of Hiawatha; a daughter, Julie Dvorak (Jeff) of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Andrea and Mitchell; three brothers, Donald Helmick (Mary Lou) of Marion, I.O. Helmick (Norma) of Oregon and Kyle Helmick (Sue) of Arkansas; and a sister, Jenny Helmick of Hiawatha. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Willadean Archer and husband Laddie, and a niece Wendy Helmick.
Jewell was born December 21, 1941 in rural Davis County the son of Harmon and Faye Dabney Helmick. He married Betty R. Eakins on April 17, 1963 in rural Davis County. He was an auto mechanic for Terry's Transfer in Covington for nine years, retiring in 2004. Jewell loved gardening, tinkering on cars, camping on his acreage down south, watching NASCAR races, and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Air Force. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
