Date: 9/8/2008 at 00:38:01While doing research on John E Coufal, I found a reference
to a "Coufal Station" as a location in either Johnson County or
Linn County, Iowa. Can anyone tell me where it was located
in about 1922. I believe that it is along what they called the
"Inter Urban" tracks from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City. Thanks for any help.
Earl
I grew up near there in Ely, Iowa (in Linn county about one
mile north of the Johnson County line.I was born in 1934 so my exposure to what was called
(I always thought it was Cou Falls) would have been from
about 1950 and after. It was just off of Hiway 218 which is
one of the main roads between Cedar Rapids and Iowa
City. "Cou Falls" was right next to the Iowa River and the
electric train called the CRANDIC (stands for CR and IC)
also ran very close to the highway. There has been major
changes in that area becase in about 1960 there was a
dam constructed on the Iowa River just south of there and
a lot of the land in the area was flooded or at least established
as a flood plain. The govenment bought up all the affected
land and the farmhouses and barns, etc. in the area were
either demolished or left to self destruct. There was a
locally "famous" restuarant that was located in Cou Falls
by the name of "The Ranch" but it eventually went out of
business. There were people named Coufal (pronounced "so-fol"
but I can't say that I ever new them.I moved away to Minneapolis in 1962 but I did visit the area
frequently until my folks died, so I am telling it the best I can
based on what I remember. There is a genealogical society or history preservation group
in Ely and if you would contact them, I'm sure some others
might be able to provide you with more accurate information.
A web site to start looking would be:
http://www.elyiowa.com/history/
Please note that the webmaster is Barb Horak who would
have a lot more information than I.Cou Falls would be just a little west of Shueyville.
After i got done writing this, i found the following web site for
Cou Falls:
http://iowa.hometownlocator.com/ia/johnson/cou-falls.cfmThe main part of the web site is just filler - I can guarantee
there are no motels (or anything else in the area.)Contact me IF YOU GET THIS MESSAGE and aslo if you
want any more information from me.Good Luck
Don Elias
