GOING TO THE STATE FAIR – Mr. Lamson informs us that there is prospect of a large representation from Jones County in various departments at the State Fair. In the line of Stock Horses there will doubtless be a good number of contestants. Among those who are expecting to make entries are Chas. E. Wales and F. F. Beardsley, of Monticello, J. E. Lovejoy and I. B. Titus, of Scotch Grove, G. W. Lathrop, of Oxford, and others. We know that our County is capable of making a superb exhibit in this most important department. Let her show her mettle.

Cattle growers also promise something handsome. It is expected that J. M. Peet, of Fairview, Ira Carter, of Oxford, E. M. Frank, of Wyoming, and C. C. Walworth, of Monticello, will be on hand with some of their well-known stock.

Although it is not the intention of our sheep growers to pull wool over anybody’s eyes, yet they propose, if circumstances are favorable, to show what Jones County can do in the sheep line. W. M. Starr, of Castle Grove, Wm. Stewart, of Greenfield and C. C. Walworth, of Monticello, and Chas. Wallace, of Chase, are expected to exhibit in this department.

Of blooded swine there will be entries of the Chester White by Dr. Blakeslee, of Anamosa, and L. Stewart, of Oxford, and probably by other parties. There is no disguising the fact that there has been a wonderful improvement in the breed of swine in our County during the last few years. This is attributable to the preserving efforts of a few enterprising citizens who have but, great expense and trouble, importing the very best stock directly from the east.

The diary department will be well represented. Five of the leading cheese manufactures in the County will enter 200 hundred pounds of cheese each, making one thousand pounds in all. They are Asa C. Bowen, F. M. Hicks, of Bowen’s Prairie, John Merritt, of Rome, E. Dodge, of Cass, E. W. Miller, of the Langworthy Cheese Co. We believe that no County, as a County, can make a better show of cheese than Jones. If we were going to brag on any particular farm product “old cheese” would be our “best holt.” Western Reserve, was from some years ago, the best brand of cheese in our market, but we never see it now and for the very good reason that we have an abundance of the home-made article fully equal to it.

Doubtless there will be a large number of articles in other departments of the Fair, and the prospect is really rather encouraging. So get ready everybody, for the Fairs – our County Fair first, and the State Fair the week following. With good weather we have reason to expect that both will be largely successful.
