Obituary.

Died – At the residence of his son, near Maxwell, California, April 10th, John Mathews, aged 84 year[sic] 11 months and 19 days.

Mr. Mathews was one of the early settlers in this county, having come here in May 1839. He bought from the government 320 acres of land in section six in this township where he made his home for about 12 years. In 1854 he removed with his family to Lyons, this State, where he resided until 1870, when he went to California, where he spent the rest of his life; visiting his children in Iowa for a few months during that time.

He was born at Doylestown, Penn., April 26th, 1801. When a young man he removed to Perry county, Ohio, where in 1825 he married Sarah Lobdell, who is still living, bearing very well her four score years. Their 60th anniversary, and last one, was celebrated at their California home on the 22nd of last February.
