Arlene Saeugling, 102, of Iowa City, died January 10, 2024 at Briarwood Health Care Center.

Arlene was born October 26, 1921 in Guttenberg, Iowa to Frank and Florence Fukey. She had one older brother, Harlan.

After graduating from Saint Mary’s Catholic High School, Arlene moved to Dubuque where she lived at Mary of the Angels Catholic boarding house for young women while attending a business college for secretaries.

Arlene married Dennis Saeugling in Guttenberg in 1946. They moved to Minneapolis where Dennis graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in civil engineering. The couple moved to Riverdale, North Dakota in 1948 where Dennis worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on construction of the Garrison Dam. Their daughter, Denise was born in Riverdale in 1952. Arlene, Dennis, and Denise moved to Iowa City in 1954, where their son, Michael, was born in 1955.

Arlene had an amazing memory, and her health did not fail her until the very end. She lived independently in her home until 4 months before her death. She and Dennis volunteered at Meals on Wheels and enjoyed traveling the southeast and southwest United States after he retired. Above all, she loved her family and friends. She will be missed and remembered always.

Arlene is survived by her two children: Denise (Kirk) Wilcox and Mike (Marnie) Saeugling, her six grandchildren: Bobby, Kyle, Kirsten, Aaron, Lee, and Annie and five great grandchildren: Magnus, Reuben, Marcel, Theo, and Mallory. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis and brother, Harlan.

We would like to thank Briarwood Care Center and Hospice for their exceptional care.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church on a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Table to Table or CommUnity Crisis Services.
