Margaret “Marge” Ann Goodfellow, 86, of Coralville passed away on December 31, 2023.

A visitation will take place on Monday, January 8, 2024, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. Iowa City from 1-3 PM with a service of remembrance following at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Project GREEN or Hancher Auditorium.

Marge was born to Dean Joseph and Sylvia (Wombacher) Amish on July 16, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa. She was a life-long resident of Iowa City, attending and graduating from St. Mary’s School (now Regina.)

She was working at an A&W drive-in restaurant when she met her future husband. Marge married Douglas Goodfellow on December 27, 1955. The couple soon settled into a new development in south Iowa City called Fair Meadows, and started a family that eventually totaled seven children and various pets. Marge loved dogs and had many Yorkie companions throughout her life.

Marge worked for Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for 24 years, retiring in 2015. She became recognizable to many as the first voice they heard when calling the hospital. Prior to that, she worked at Gilpin Paint and Glass and the family printing company.

Marge was a lifelong Catholic, and faith played an important role in her life, especially when she was younger. Her children remember her as an active member at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church until corralling her seven kids for Sunday service simply wore her out. In the last year though, she had started to reconnect with her faith.

Marge was always creative and resourceful. From teaching herself how to put fancy finishes on everyday items (antiquing furniture for the home or reupholstering a set chairs) to learning about landscaping and interior decoration, Marge deeply enjoyed do-it-yourself projects. Sometimes known as “The Puzzle Lady,” she was also an avid jigsaw-puzzler, and probably assembled several hundred complex jigsaw puzzles over the years.

Marge was an ardent supporter and contributor to many arts organizations in Iowa City. She loved to socialize and always had season tickets to Hancher, taking her children and grandchildren to see performances that ranged from Broadway shows to The Nutrcracker Ballet, and the Joffrey Dance Company.

Throughout her life, Marge greatly enjoyed gardening. She grew vegetables for the family and was active with Project GREEN, helping to plant trees along Highway 6 in Iowa City and Hosta plants throughout the community. She loved to exchange flowering plants with friends.

Marge will be remembered as a friend, a volunteer, and a patron of the arts. More than anything she will be lovingly remembered as a wife and mother who faithfully loved and supported her husband for more than 60 years, and raised a family who continue to follow the examples she set, and will admire and love her forever.

Marge is survived by her children Cathi Goodfellow, Robert (Renee) Goodfellow, Terri Goodfellow, Andrew Goodfellow, Brad (Mary) Goodfellow, Janet (Peter) Goodfellow-Zarate, and Lisa Goodfellow; grandchildren Bailee, Juju, Madison, Kayla, Claire, J.D., and Rylee; and great-grandchildren Courtlyn, Dean, and Camryn.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Douglas and her sister, Doris.
