Ann Elizabeth Slattery Smothers was born December 20, 1946 to Thomas William and Bessie Louise Hudson Slattery in Chicago, Illinois.

Ann was a 1965 graduate of Regina High School and Iowa City Commercial College. Attended the University of Iowa and Iowa Central Community College. She was employed by Northwestern Bell, The State of Iowa, Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh Paint and Glass and The University of Iowa at Old Capitol Museum.

Ann Smothers was the director of the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City. She directed all aspects of the museum, including facility, program, financial, gift shop and personnel management. Ann joined the museum as assistant director in 1986 and served as acting director for one year beginning in July 1995, before being selected permanent director in June of 1996. She held that position until 2004.

As director, Ann was ambassador for the Old Capitol and the rich state history it represents. In 1996, Old Capitol received Iowa's "Attraction of the Year" award for success in promoting tourism. In 1999, the Iowa Division of Tourism and Iowa Travel Federation presented Old Capitol Museum with the Iowa Web Site Award.

Ann was a member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa City Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau and 2000-2001 board president. She belonged to a number of organizations including the American Association of Museums, American Association of State and Local History, Eastern Iowa Tourism Association and Iowa Museum Association and served as a National Historic Landmark Steward-National Park Service Heritage Preservation Services Program.

December 3, 1965 she was united in marriage to Terry Alan Smothers at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. They have three children and seven grandchildren. We share a love of history and are proud to call ourselves "museum junkies". We lived outside the city limits of Iowa City on 5 acres where there is always plenty to do. Ann has many interests but has spent the last 45 years doing genealogy.

Ann is survived by her husband Terry, daughter Jennifer Louise (Ron) Brida of Landisville, PA, son Anthony William (Joan) Smothers of Iowa City, Iowa. Six grandchildren, Logan Miller, Hudson Coccoluto, Lauren, Jacob, Olivia, and Claire Smothers. And four brothers. Leo (Stephanie) Slattery, Houston, Texas, James (Tom Freitag) Slattery, M.D. Mazomanie, Wisconsin, Edward (Sue) Slattery, Swisher, Iowa, Tim (Jean) Slattery, Hudson, Iowa; in-laws, Gary (Diane), Connie (Bob) Pierce, Dennis (Tamara), David (Lori), and Betsy Smothers; twenty-one nieces and nephews, and many cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Amy Marie Smothers, Grandson Colin Arthur Miller, her husband’s parents, Robert K. and Berniece (Patera) Smothers and brother-in-law, Kevin Smothers.
