Peaceful and surrounded by his loving family, Richard (Dick) Davin passed away on January 24, 2024, at the age of 92 years and has entered God’s Kingdom. Dick was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to so many.

Visitation will be Monday, January 29th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City beginning with a vigil at 3:30 p.m. followed by public visitation until to 7 p.m.

The family will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Troy Richmond and Father Ken Kuntz as co-celebrants. Burial will take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgove.

In lieu of flowers and plants, the family suggests memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Iowa Right to Life. To share a thought, memory or condolence with his family please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website @ www.gayandciha.com.

Richard Thomas Davin was born August 19, 1931 to Thomas and Mildred Davin. He attended school in Cosgrove and proudly served in the Army two years as sergeant. Dick met his best friend Mary (Kucera) at a dance. They were married June 9, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell. They have seven children. Cindy (Cliff) Haugland; Tom (Judy) Davin; John Davin; Julie (Mike) Quinlan; Teresa (Dan) Cramer; Lori (Paul) Sullivan and Amy (LaWayne) Luers. He has 15 grandchildren, Morgan Ostrander (Matt), Paige McGovern (Joe), Richard Sullivan (Julia), Joe Sullivan (Marianna), T.J. Anderson, Brent Luers, Carly Schulty (Spencer), Gabe Haugland (Carolyn), Luke Haugland (Rachel), Tyler Davin (Alyssa), Tim Davin (Molly), Alyssa Davin, Katherine Seye (Logan), Lee Quinlan (Megan), and Meredith Beaderstadt (Jerod)and 22 great-grandchildren.

Dick was committed to his Catholic faith and enjoyed daily mass at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. He and Mary later joined St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City where they could be seen often. One of his joys in life was having a close relationship with several of the priests over his lifetime, including Father Setonga and being involved in projects to provide safe drinking water in Tanzania. He enjoyed visiting those in nursing homes and the hospitalized.

Dick and Mary had a passion for antiques and they opened an antique store at their home on Muscatine Avenue for 30 years. They then opened their real estate office on Dubuque Street in Iowa City for 35 years. In 2004, both Dick and Mary were recognized as Iowa City Area Realtors of the year.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, his children, sister, Mina Lea Johnson, and many nieces and nephews. He will be reunited with his parents, in-laws Charles and Emma Kucera, Daughter-in-Law, Michelle Davin; Great-Grandchild, Grayson Seye; Brother-in-Law, Pat Johnson; and many close relatives who have preceded him.

His biggest joy was his family. He was a friend to many over the years and was a wonderful story teller.
