Frederick Anthony Schieber “Tony”, 87, passed away November 22, 2023.

A memorial mass will celebrated at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with visitation held prior to the mass from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Saint Columba Catholic Church in Conception Junction, MO, followed by burial at Saint Columba Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City or Iowa City Hospice.

Tony was born June 20, 1936 near Conception, MO, the fifth of 14 children, to Paul & Magdalene Schieber. He grew up farming in northwest Missouri and graduated from Jefferson High School in Conception, MO. After working at various jobs, Tony was drafted into the Army at the age of 22. After the Army, he went to Northwest Missouri State to study Accounting. While in college, he met and, in 1963, married Cleanne Sue Ferguson. After a short stay in Kansas City, in 1965, they moved to Iowa City where he joined McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn & Company (now RSM McGladery). While at McGladrey he worked with a variety of clients and industries. With his can-do attitude and ability to get to the bottom line, he earned the respect of his colleagues and clients, many of whom became life-long friends. While he worked long hours, he always made time to go to his children’s games and activities and to be home at 6 for dinner each night, even if it meant he had to go back to the office to work later. He stayed with McGladrey until he retired in 1996.

Tony had a cartoon with a man on a suit riding a tractor that said “He became an accountant so he could buy a farm.” He lived this cartoon, buying a farm in Clyde Missouri in 1982. He loved going to and working with his nephews on the farm. He and Cleanne spent a lot of time on the farm, and enjoyed the work, the bonfires and spending time with their relatives.

In addition to traveling to the farm, Tony and Cleanne enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren, as well as traveling to Hawaii and Gulf Shores Alabama to escape the Iowa winters.

Tony was an athlete, playing basketball in high school, and softball in Missouri and with the McGladery team in Iowa. In 1974 he began jogging. Until he broke his hip in 2023, he faithfully jogged two miles a day for years even in the rain, sleet and snow (with the bruises from more than one fall to prove it). He tracked this mileage and in 2019 he had jogged the equivalent to the distance around equator. In addition to participating in sports, Tony loved to watch sports. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, the St. Louis Cardinals and of course the Iowa Hawkeyes!

Tony was a devoted parishioner of at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City. After a tornado destroyed the church in 2006, Tony was a key member of the committee to relocate and rebuild the church. He worked tirelessly with the fundraising and accounting for the rebuild and continued to assist with the accounting for the parish after the rebuild.

Tony was a member of The Kiwanis Club of Iowa City for over 50 years, and held various offices in this club. He also served on the boards of many not-for-profit entities, including Hospice of Iowa City, Youth Homes and the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa. However, his favorite “board” meetings were his weekly meetings to play cards with his friends. He shared this love for playing cards with his children and grandchildren, where you could always find him in the middle of a game of cards during his family gatherings.

Tony was active with the Regina Boosters for many years, where he acted as treasurer. You could find him at the athletic events, activities, Iowa games & 4-H fair working the concession stands and accounting for the funds afterwards. He was an instrumental member of the group of Boosters who planned and executed the inaugural Fall Fun Festival.

Tony will be missed by many, including his daily coffee group (where for some reason, no coffee was ever consumed).

Tony is survived by his four children, Dan (Cathy) Schieber of Elizabethtown, KY, Dee (Bret) Rolig of Shawnee, KS, Deb (Walter) Bennett of Lenexa, KS, and Dawn (Eric) Hanneman of Omaha, NE; seven grandchildren: Allison Recker, Natalie Pless, Kaitlin Melton, Patrick Schieber, Braden Rolig, Abigail Hanneman and Hayden Hanneman; and three great-granddaughters: Reese Recker, Addison Melton and Sutton Recker. He is also survived by brothers Harry, Jerry, Paul, Ray and Ken Schieber and sisters, Kate Henry, Liz Effinger, Bernadette Meyer, Patricia Schmidt, and Diane VanNordstrand.

Tony is reuniting in heaven with his wife, Cleanne, his parents and his siblings Marilyn Jermain, Jim Schieber and Dennis Schieber.
