Anne “Annie” Lisa Larsen (61), of Iowa City, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on the morning of Thursday, October 26, 2023. Her passing followed a battle with ALS. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 4 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. A potluck reception will be held at noon the following day at Gloria Dei.

Annie was diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS in October of 2022, following many months of symptoms and tests. Before receiving this devastating diagnosis, Annie worked at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where she was also an active member, as office manager. Over the years, Annie lived a colorful life, wearing many hats. She moved to Chicago in her early twenties to pursue a dream of dancing professionally. She waited tables, tended bars and did a small amount of freelance choreography, but ultimately settled into a career of managing restaurants in Chicago and Minneapolis and then athletic clubs in Minneapolis and Denver, before returning to Iowa City in 2010 to be close to her aging parents. Annie was a caregiver and protector, always standing up for her siblings and helping to care for her parents in their final years. She also looked after the members of Gloria Dei in ways that often went beyond her paid responsibilities. She loved her nieces and nephews and was involved in their lives. Annie attended City High School, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Willam Woods University and Normandale Community College.

Annie is preceded in death by her father, Karl, and mother, Sonya. She is survived by her brother, (Karl) Sam Larsen of Lone Tree, Iowa; sister, Sara Larsen of Madison, Wisconsin; brother Tom Larsen of Iowa City; aunt Sandy Clausen of Iowa City; nieces, Faun, Annika, Kristen and nephews, Jericho, Kaj, Leif and Jonus. She will be remembered for her snarky sense of humor, her compassion and fierce love of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, her family would like memorial donations made in Annie’s name to Hospice of Iowa City, The Iowa City Free Medical Clinic and/or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
