George Tomlin Dead.

At a few minutes before nine o'clock on Sunday evening, George Tomlin, for so many years, the faithful and appreciated janitor of the State University, died at him home, 131 west College street, after a two weeks' illness from an acute attack of liver disease and gall stone, the same difficulty that caused the death of major W. H. Goodrell.
Mr. Tomlin was born in England and was 69 years of age. He came to Wisconsin a half century ago and very soon afterward to Iowa. He was for a time a farmer, enlisted in Co B, 22d Iowa, and was wounded at Vicksburg. In 1871, he became janitor at the State University where he remained until his death. He had several times wished to resign, and his resignation is now in Secretary Haddock's hands. He was a faithful, honest and appreciated man, whose retention was desired by regents and faculty and a plan had been arranged to lighten his work in order that he might remain. He was a trusted and respected employee and gave to the institution a manly and conscientious services.
Mr. Tomlin was married in 1861 to Miss Lavina Lawhewd [sic]. Four children were born to them, Samuel and William, who live in this city; George, who died eleven months ago, and Daniel, who died in 1896.
He was a long-time member of S. J. Kirkwood Post, No. 8, G. A. R. The funeral takes place from his late residence at four o'clock to-morrow afternoon, and the services will be in charge of the Post.
