Mary Madden Top, age 99, died at Parkview Manor in Wellman on Saturday, August 28, 2004.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Family will greet friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be at Oakland cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Contributions in memory of Mary may be sent to the charity of your choice.

Mary Madden Top was born on July 25, 1905, the daughter of Anna and Lawrence Madden of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. After attending nursing school in Chicago, Illinois, she became a nurse in Detroit, Michigan. On September 29, 1932, she married Dr. Franklin H. Top and they lived in Detroit until 1949 and then in Minneapolis. In 1952, she moved to Iowa City when Dr. Top became Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the University of Iowa.

Mary was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City and its Women’s Guild. She served as President of the University Club, President of The Newcomers Club and was a member of the Dancing Club of Iowa City.

Her family includes a son and his wife, Franklin Jr. and Lois Top of Rockville, MD, a daughter, Kathy Bogart of Birmingham, MI, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter Sheila Top.

The Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Mary's family and her services.
