John Albert Anton ter Haar, 78, of Iowa City died August 21, 2004 at Oaknoll following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Kenneth Kuntz officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A reception at St. Mary’s will follow the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of East Central Iowa or Hospice of Iowa City.

John was born in the Netherlands, February 26, 1926, the son of Frederick J. and Louise ter Haar. He immigrated to the United States in 1949. He married Eleanor Fey in 1955. John was a veteran of the Allied Forces, serving two years in Indonesia.

John attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1957 with a doctorate in German literature. Following graduation, he taught at the University of Notre Dame for seven years before returning to the University of Iowa where he taught in the German department for 30 years. In addition to German literature, he taught Dutch and a course in the Language, Science and Arts program for many years.

John is survived by his wife Eleanor ter Haar; one daughter Barbara ter Haar Marget and her children Ryan, Bailey, and Geordy Marget of Richmond, VA; and one son Paul ter Haar of Iowa City.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
