Mary Maxwell, 84, of 36 N. Lowell Street in Iowa City, died of cancer on Saturday, July 17th at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her family.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 19th at 3:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Rudolph Berndt officiating. The family will greet friends Monday in the parish hall at St. Mary’s from 1:00 until 3:00 PM.
Mrs. Maxwell chose to be cremated. Private burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. The family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born October 27, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Lawrence and Gladys (Betzler) Coloton. She graduated from Berea High School in Berea, Ohio and attended business college. She married John A. Maxwell on December 28, 1946 in Berea. The couple moved to Iowa City where John studied dentistry at the University of Iowa.
Mary worked for several years at West Music Co. in Iowa City and later for 12 years, at Iowa State Bank & Trust Co., retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Mary is survived by her children, John and his wife Kathy, Patty Teeple and Greg and his wife Mary Jean, all of Iowa City; grandchildren Jennifer (Teeple) Barham of Bloomington, Illinois, Heather (Teeple) Jeanneret & her husband Sean of Niceville, Florida, Sarah Maxwell of Northfield, Minnesota, Laurie Maxwell of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Amber Maxwell of St. Paul, Minnesota, Matthew Maxwell of Madison, Wisconsin and Christopher Maxwell of Iowa City; a brother, James Coloton and his wife Elsie of Berea, Ohio and a sister, Sister Mary Catherine Rennecker of Chardon, Ohio.

Her parents and her husband John preceded her in death.
