A Memorial Gathering for family and friends to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held Friday, June 18 from 5:30 to 8:00p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Dorothy was born January 21, 1927 in Gilman, Iowa, the daughter of Gifford and Mae (Gunderson) Meling.

Dorothy was employed at Taylor’s Maid Rite in Marshalltown during the 1950’s. Her move to Iowa City in 1961 was the beginning of her career at the UIHC in the department of Urology. In 1978 Dorothy joined the General Clinical Research Center staff as the head secretary. She was promoted to administrative manager for the College of Medicine human research center in 1981 where she served until her retirement in 1989. While at the center Dorothy oversaw the preparation of annual reports to the National Institutes of Health, and submissions of competitive renewal applications, which resulted in the continuous funding of the research unit.

Dorothy was a member of the Marshalltown Church of the Nazarene and affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene in Iowa City. She supported the prison ministry of Calvin and Virginia Oyler in Kansas, the Billy Graham Ministries and many other charities. She was very involved with the Johnson County Humane Society and was recently recognized at their awards breakfast for her compassion and respect for homeless animals in need.

Dorothy is survived by her sister, Marilyn Talbert and her husband Lloyd of Ankeny, Iowa, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and her furry companions Heidi, Spook, Buster, Mittens and Toby. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Gordon, Johnny, Marion and Gifford Jr.

Dorothy’s family would like to convey their deepest appreciation to Dr. Rod Zeitler, Dr. Veronica Kolder, Bruce Teague with Iowa City Hospice, Janet Ashman, a friend who lovingly cared for Dorothy’s cats, and all the friends and neighbors who supported Dorothy during her illness.
