Kenneth M. “Coach” Dains Sr., 66, of 616 10th Avenue in Coralville, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics after a brief battle with cancer.

The family will greet friends Wednesday from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A celebration of Ken’s Life will be held at 6:30 pm at Lensing’s with Pastor Karl Devine-Koch officiating. A private burial will be held at Charleston Cemetery in Charleston, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Kenneth Dains Memorial Fund.

Ken was born December 27, 1937 in Moline, Illinois, the son of Ray & Minnie (Neal) Dains. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1956 and then received his bachelor and masters degree’s in Physical Education from the University of Iowa. He married Sally Krueger in 1959 in Keokuk, Iowa. The couple was married for 29 years until Sally’s death in 1988.

He taught physical education in the Iowa City Community School District for nearly 30 years and during that time, coached wrestling, football and soccer at Iowa City West High School and Northwest Junior High in Coralville. After retirement, Ken worked at the Coralville Hy-Vee Food Store. An avid St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan, Ken also enjoyed bowling, golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include four sons, Max Dains & his wife Carolyn of North Liberty, Jeff Dains & his wife Angie of Tiffin, Jerry Dains & his wife Jodie, Rob Dains and one daughter, Carrie Brown & her husband Mike, all of Iowa City; grandchildren, Heidi, Sarah, Max, Parker, Griffin, Callie, Mason & Molly; brothers, Jerry Dains & his wife Shirley of Ontario, California, Ray Dains of Keokuk, Dave Dains of Bullhead City, Arizona, sister, Dorothy Brown of Boise, Idaho, sisters & brothers in law,
Diane Hughes of East Lansing, Michigan, Donna Dains of Ft. Madison, Ross Wear of Carthage, Illinois, Diane Hughes of East Lansing, Michigan, John Acer & his wife Martha of Phoenix, Arizona, Henry Krueger & his wife Francis of Keokuk and Bob Krueger & his wife Marion of Keokuk and many nieces and nephews.

Ken was also preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Marv and a sister Donna.
