Dr. Donald McDonald, 72, and his wife, Barbara, 70, peacefully ended their lives on Friday, April 30, 2004 at their home.

Memorial Services to celebrate the lives of Donald and Barbara will be Friday, May 7, 2004 at 10AM at New Song Episcopal Church, Coralville with Rev. Elizabeth Coulter officiating. Their families will greet friends after 9 AM, Friday at the Church. A memorial fund has been established in their names.

Donald was born March 5, 1932 in Salt Lake City, the son of Donald and Dotty Miller McDonald. Barbara was born on January 3, 1934 in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Albert and Hazel Green Haslam.

Donald was a graduate of the University of Utah, where he received his BS, MS and his Ph.D. in Biology. He had taught at Carbon College in Price, Utah and in 1964 moved to Iowa City where he became a Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Donald taught environmental engineering and was a Professor Emeritus.

Following the Korean War, Donald served in the Air Force where he taught Army Rangers survival techniques.

Barbara attended Evergreen State College and had lived in Olympia, Washington for many years where she was a legislative lobbyist at the State Capitol.

Donald and Barbara had met in high school and dated. In November, 1988 they were married in Iowa City. They both enjoyed hiking and the outdoors, traveling throughout the world and were connoisseurs of wine. Barbara enjoyed ballet dancing and belly dancing.

Donald and Barbara were inseparable and wished to be together hand in hand forever.

Donald is survived by his children; Barbara McDonald and her husband David Bonham of Iowa City, Kerry McDonald and her husband, Dr. John Wallace of Carroll, Iowa, Donald T. McDonald of Indianola.

Barbara is survived by her sons; Kelly Cowan of Winlock, Washington and John Cowan of Iowa City; her siblings, Albert Haslam and his wife Brenda of Salt Lake City and Joy Loveday of Cedar City, Utah.

Five Stepchildren

Their six grandchildren; Noah, Delilah, Amelia, Sam, Donald Joseph and Lisa.

Donald’s former wife, Bobbie McDonald of Salt Lake City and former son-in-law Jonathan Jordahl of Iowa City. Barbara’s former spouse Gary Cowan of Tacoma, Washington.

They were preceded in death by their parents and Donald’s two former wives Joyce and Ardie.
