Barbara Jean Fisher, 47, of 1135 E. College St. in Iowa City, died late Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, due to complications of her longtime battle with diabetes.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 1:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Father Joseph VanPhung officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, March 26, 2004 from 4:00 to 7:00PM, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30pm and a parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 pm. A reception will follow the committal service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made in Barb’s name to the American Diabetes Association or to the Catholic Community Foundation for Regina.

Barb was born August 31, 1956, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of James Vernon “Vern” and Mary Jane Klimes Fisher. She was a 1974 graduate of Regina High School. Barb worked as a telephone operator at the University of Iowa until her retirement in 1999.

In her happier and healthier years, Barb enjoyed the company of her friends, loved to go to antique stores, was an avid reader, and took tremendous pride and delight in her niece and nephew. She also had a great knowledge of trivia, collected penguin and lighthouse figurines, and had a special love for anything Irish. The family is grateful for the loving care and companionship of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Dialysis unit staff and “family” that Barb had come to know. All may take comfort in the faithful belief that Barb is now at peace.

Barb is survived by her father, Vern Fisher and his wife Betty of Iowa City; her brother Wayne and his wife Jerilyn of Iowa City; her nephew Brendan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her niece Courtney of Iowa City, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother.
