Anna was born January 18, 1910 in Zurich, Switzerland, the daughter of Carl Ferdinand “Freddy” and Mina Schriever Rothenhoefer. She and her family moved to the United States in 1912 and settled in Elkader, Iowa where they farmed. Anna graduated from high school in Elkader and in 1933 she received her BA degree in Social Sciences from the University of Iowa.

Following college she was employed as a nursing assistant in pediatrics at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was later a waitress at many local restaurants including Reich’s Café, The Princess, Hamburg Inn and Towncrest Inn. Anna worked as a meter maid for the City of Iowa City. This was her favorite job because she could be outdoors. When Anna left her work at the City at the age of 65 she became a cook for the priests at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City for several years, before retiring at the age of 85.

Anna was a caring, generous and hard working woman. Her adopted children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren were her pride and joy. Most of all she nurtured them like a mother and always found the importance of keeping the family together. Even though the family was large Anna’s heart and arms embraced them all. She always made sure they attended their swimming and musical lessons. To her great and great-great grandchildren she was known as Big Ann or Auntie Ann. She sponsored children throughout the world through Feed the Children and other charitable organizations. She was a strong Democrat.

The most important things in her life were God, her Church and her children.

Anna is survived by her brother, Francis of Chicago, Illinois
Her adopted children, Howard Jensen and his wife Dorothyjean of Oxford, Harold Jensen and his wife Jean of Santa Rosa, California, Alice Kelp and her husband Alfred of Petaluma, California and George Baculis and his wife Diana of Iowa City.
