FAIRFIELD HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1950

The FHS class of 1950 held its 60-year reunion Sept. 17-18 in Fairfield. Committee members included Carl and Margaret BERG, Ron PRILL, H. Wayne NELSON, and Nancy and Paul ENGWALL.

Scheduled events began Sept. 17 with a Maid-Rite meal at the home of Joyce STANLEY. Participants who helped STANLEY plan the Maid-Rite meal were Ron and Linda BAKER and Doris and Wayne BROWN. A total of 30 attended the mid-day picnic. The meal included Maid-Rite sandwiches, baked beans, pasta salad, chips, fresh fruit, cookies and brownies.

A buffet supper and fellowship gathering was held after the meal at McElhinny House with 37 people in attendance.

To conclude the reunion, a social hour and banquet was held at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. The evening was filled with reminiscing and the renewal of friendships.

H. Wayne NELSON was master of ceremonies. The son "You'll Never Walk Alone," which was used at the class's high school graduation, was played by NELSON. The Rev. Don Piper gave the invocation.

Paul ENGWALL read a memorial tribute to deceased classmates. Deceased classmates totalled 46, 11 of whom died in 2010, including Delores KURTZ HERROD, Richard GOODWIN, Mary DOUD MUNSON, Alva ESHELMAN, Janice TELLER WATTS, Norman SMITHHART, Charles KEPLER, Anna Mae WALKER PULSE and Josephine OLDFIELD.

A curious thing happened to one of the out-of-town attendees, Frank, during the reunion. His truck was stolen while he ate breakfast at a small Fairfield cafe. Frank found his truck, however, the next evening neatly parked across the street from the convention center. All four of his high school yearbooks and good shoes were still in the car, but 80 miles had been added to the odometer. Many questions remain unanswered: Where did it go? Was it involved in unlawful acts? Was it a prank by a high school classmate or an old girlfriend getting even?

Fairfield residents attending the reunion were JoAnn THYS, Donna LEATHERS, Ronald PRILL, Paul and Nancy ENGWALL, Carl and Margaret BERG, Sue AUSTIN, Pete and Ferne WICKLIFF, and Jim and Norma YOUNG.

Other Iowans attending were Jim and Marie PUMROY of Ottumwa, Doris and Wayne BROWN of Ames, Marilyn and Dale SIPE of Ottumwa, Bob and Ruth HARRISON of Marion, Dorothy and Marv WHITHAM of Holstein, Wayne NELSON of Farmington, Don CLARRIDGE of Ottumwa and Virginia CLARRIDGE HENDERSON of Keota.

Lane BUSH, a former grade school classmate at Buchanan No. 2 Prairie Chapel School, and wife Jane attended the Sept. 18 banquet. Special guests at the Maid-Rite meal were Tom LOUDEN and Charlotte COEN LENHART, both of Fairfield.

Classmates and spouses attending from other states were William R. STEWART of Sun City, Ariz.; Les and Monna COCHRAN of Burnsville, Minn.; Harold and Neysa LAUGHLIN of Downers Grove, Ill.; Ron and Linda BAKER of Arvada, Colo.; Joan MITCHELL BOYD of Belleview, Neb.; Don and Joan PIPER of Vienna, Va.; Leonard and Shirley GILBERT of Lakewood, Colo.; Bill and Jean LAWRENCE of Donwoody, Ga.; Delores SOMSLY of Farmington, Minn.; Lee and Shirley SMITH of Centerville, Ohio; Don and Kathy ROBERTS of Milton, Wis.; and Frank BUCKINGHAM of Nixa, Mo.

The class has celebrated with a reunion every five years since the 25th reunion in 1975. No plans have yet been made for a 65-year reunion in 2015.
