Brown, Helen Violet – 1920-2014

Helen Violet Brown, the daughter of Elgin Walter and Minnie Daisy (Iiams) Klingaman, was born May 12, 1920 in Newton, IA and died May 23, 2014 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 94 years.
Helen attended school at Newton and graduated from Newton High School. After graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Rapids. After completing teachers college, she taught country school at Green Castle School in Green Castle Township.
On January 8, 1942 Helen was united in marriage to James Howard Brown in Newton. They moved to Atlantic before settling in Griswold. Helen became a nurse's aide at the Griswold Care Center before becoming the activity director. After retiring from the Griswold Care Center, she remained very active in the activities that took place there.
Helen was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church, the U.M.W., and had taught Sunday School for sixty-six years. She was a charter member of the local TOPS chapter, an avid supporter of the Cass County Museum, had been active in the Order of Eastern Star, and had been a Girl Scout Leader receiving the Juliett Low award.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband; her son Patrick; her sister Doris Hickey; and an infant daughter Ann Louise.
She is survived by her children: Marty Brown and wife Carol of Dallas, TX, Mary-Margaret Anders of Mt Ida, Arkansas, John Brown and wife Kathie of Kansas City, MO, Kathy Rassekh of Morgantown, WV, Michael Brown and wife Cheri of Garner, IA, and Larry Brown of Dallas, TX; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; her brother Forrest Klingaman of Green Valley, AZ; and her sister Thelma Hobbs of Greeley, CO. Helen is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service for Helen will be held Friday, June 20, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton, IA, Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
