Hicks, Earl Huff – 1923-2001

Earl H. Hicks, 77, of Newton died of cancer Thursday at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Cremation will follow services. Burial of the cremains will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Hicks was born in Nevada, Mo., and had lived in Baxter from 1952 to 1995 before moving to Newton. He was a retired production supervisor with Maytag Corp., an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ, Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed his garden.
He is survived by his wife, Berdene; five sons, William of Sibley, Michael of Bettendorf, Ed of Kellogg, Kendall of Minneapolis and John of Houston; a daughter, Linda Hershberger of Homestead; a brother, Lawrence of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Margaret Bender of Pleasantville, Marie Bender of Rockaway, Mo., and Betty Schafer of Newton; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 3 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or Hospice Kavanagh House.
