Alice L. Humes, 88, of 200 S. 8th Ave. E. died Thursday, Jan. 3, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steve Pannkuk officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cem. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call after noon Sunday at the funeral home where family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and may be left at the church on Monday or at the funeral home.
The daughter of Joseph and Laura Kelso Roberts, she was born March 9, 1913, in Novinger, Mo. She attended Newton schools. On Feb. 25, 1929, she married W. Avery Humes in Newton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling and crocheting afghans, and was a Chicago Cubs fan. Mrs. Humes was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Thomas (Tom) and Judy Humes of Mitchellville, three daughters and a son-in-law, Edith Anderson of Gold Canyon, Ariz., and Alice Ladd and Patricia (Patty) and Carroll Peery, all of Newton, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and a brother, Jack Roberts of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a child in infancy and several brothers and sisters.
