Robert Peter Wiese died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the age of 85 at his home in Newton, Iowa.
Bob was born in Round Lake, Minn., on May 19, 1926 to Peter and Lela (Bell) Wiese and grew up in a farming community of family and friends. He graduated from high school in Brewster, Minn., and in 1950, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps, during the Korean War. He served as a Corporeal, working in a motor pool in France from October 1950 to October 1952. Bob married Darlene Elsie Zierke on June 21, 1953 in Worthington, Minn., where he worked for Graff Motor Supply. He went to work for Sather Cookie Company in Round Lake, Minn., as a truck driver in 1956, and then went into sales for the company, moving his family to Newton, Iowa in 1963. He finished his career at Des Moines Brokerage, where he was an award-winning salesman from 1969 to 1991. Bob always appreciated a good sales pitch. His early years on the farm were the source of many fond memories and a host of stories. After retiring, he and Darlene revisited those memories at thresher's and steam engine reunions and festivals. He also took up ham radio operation, and he and Darlene hit the road with a fifth wheel camper, spending winters in Arizona for a number of years. Bob maintained close ties with his extended family in Minnesota. One of his favorite things was to go fishing with his brother Harold. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and family vacations invariably included camping. He had a beautiful singing voice, planted and tended a vegetable garden wherever he lived and never met a dog he didn't like.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, five siblings-Gladys Weibel, Adelia (Russell) Hawkinson, Luella Karstans, Linda Warden and Alice Kansanback, sister-in-law Doris Wiese, and six children and their spouses: Janice and Jim Fales of New Franklin, MO; Steve and Norma Wiese of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jim and Valerie Wiese of Ankeny, Ia; Barb and Jeff Hill of Kansas City, Mo; Brad and Terry Wiese of Omaha, Neb; and Shelly and Marvin Smith of Columbia, Mo. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Clarence and Harold Wiese.
