Poage, Irma – 1930-2021

Irma Poage, 90, of Baxter, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at MercyOne in Des Moines. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter. A private family burial will follow in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
Irma was born June 15, 1930, in Kaiserlautern, Germany to Auguste Dungfelder. After high school, she attended trade school to be a women’s tailor, a skill she used for all her life. She met Wayne Poage, when he was stationed in Germany, at a Lutheran Church in Kaiserslautern and won his heart with her delicious cake. She moved to Baxter Sept. 10, 1958, and married Wayne on Sept. 14, 1958, on the family farm. Irma began working for the Jasper County Assessor’s office in 1970 and became the assistant county assessor. Irma retired from the county in 1996. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter where she taught Sunday school and was the Sunday school treasurer for 30 years. She was also a member of the Women’s Fellowship at the church. Irma enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling to Germany, sewing and making clothes, cooking and baking brownies for Nathan and Maddy when they came to visit after school.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Wayne Poage; son, John (Sybil) Poage; grandchildren, Nathan Poage, Maddy Poage, Gary Fallon, Rodney (Laura) Fallon, Stacy (Rodney) Pearson, Stefanie (Mike) Cluphf, Emily (Tim) Murray and Alyssa Burcham; great-grandchildren, Sam Pearson, Devin Pearson, Beka Pearson, Austin Penning and Jamey Murray; cousin, Heinz Dungfelder; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her mother; and son, Hans Lenz.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter.
Fredregill Funeral and Cremation has been entrusted with the care of Irma and her family.
