Ira Man, 72, Dies Today
Ira, IA. (Special to The Daily News) – George Whitehead, 72, retired Ira farmer, died at his home this morning at Ira at 6:00 o’clock following a year’s illness. Mr. Whitehead, suffering from high blood pressure and other complications, had been in a coma since Sunday morning.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Christian church in Ira, Rev. Clark Utterback of the Melbourne Christian church will be in charge. Interment will be in Union Chapel west of Ira.
George G. Whitehead was born in Poweshiek township on Nov. 1, 1867, where he grew to manhood and received his education in the rural schools. He was the son of Austin and Elizabeth Weston Whitehead.
He made his life work at farming and retired and moved into Ira several years ago.
On Feb. 23, 1897, he was united in marriage to Stella Tramel and to this union were born six children who survive.
He was a faithful member of the Christian church at Ira, being one of the charter members of the church.
Surviving relatives are his widow and six children, Wilbur of Mingo, Mrs. Ben Bentley (May) of Spooner, Wis., Floyd of Ira, Glen of Collins, Mrs. Lloyd DeReus (Ruth) of Mingo and Virgil of Idaho, 12 grandchildren, a brother, Emery of Alliance, Nebraska, two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Watt of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Will Stouffer of Colfax.
His parents and one sister preceded him in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bentley and Russell and Audra of Spooner, Wis., arrived at the home this morning several hours before Mr. Whitehead died. A broadcast was to go out today for the son Virgil who when last heard from was in Idaho.

Obituary – George Whitehead, son of Austin and Elizabeth Weston Whitehead, was born Nov. 1, 1867 on a farm north west of Ira. He grew to manhood and received his education in this vicinity.
Farming was his chosen occupation which he followed until five years ago when his wife and he moved to the present home in Ira, where he peacefully departed this life at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Mr. Whitehead became noticeably ill about a year ago and although medical assistance was given constantly and tender loving care was administered by those near and dear to him, he was a losing battle, physically.
Mr. Whitehead was united in marriage with Stella Tramel on Feb. 23, 1897. To this union six children were born, who with their mother survive. Those surviving relatives of Mr. Whitehead are: his widow, six children, Wilbur of Mingo; Mae or Mrs. Ben Bentley of Spooner, Wis.; Floyd of Ira; Glen of Collins; Ruth or Mrs. Lloyd De Reus of Mingo; and Virgil of Idaho; twelve grandchildren; a brother Emory of Alliance, Nebr.; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Watt of Long Beach, Calif.; and Mrs. Allie Stouffer of Colfax; many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. His parents and one sister Clara Watt preceded him in death.
For many years Mr. Whitehead has been very active in the affairs of the Union Chapel Memorial cemetery, and Sunday school associations, often holding responsible positions in all these organizations.
