Bert L. Phipps, 75, of Grinnell, died Oct. 8, 2000 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
His funeral was Oct. 11 at :30 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Officiating the service were Rev. Roy Stein of the Assembly of God Church at Grinnell and Rev. Sam Reaves of the Assembly of God Church at Seymore.
Naomi Reaves played the organ and Keely Stein was the soloist. Music selections were “Rock of Ages”, Save in the Arms of Jesus”, “Silver Haired Daddy of Mine”, and “Daddy’s Hands”.
Pallbearers were Wade Phipps, Dave Phipps, Duane Phipps, Curt Phipps, Glenn Phipps, Kenny Phipps, Jack Phipps, and Chris Vitek.
Honorary bearers were Richard Phipps, Bill Phipps, Jim Phipps, and John Phipps.
Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery in rural Jasper County, Iowa.
Born Oct. 12, 1924 at the family home in rural Jasper County, Iowa, Bert was the son of Wade H. and Lucy Trease Phipps. He moved with his family to the Grinnell area as a young child and was educated at Grant School #2.
He was married to Maxine Large on Oct. 7, 1944, in Montezuma, a union of 56 years. The couple lived in Grinnell prior to moving to Searsboro in 1972. He was employed at a fertilizer plant in Grinnell for 28 years and retired in 1980. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Grinnell for many years.
Bert’s life was centered on his family; they were his pride and joy. He loved his ponies and his tractors and enjoyed tinkering with things and working with his hands. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He will be missed for his love of family and his sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Searsboro; six sons, Wade of St. Helens, Oregon, Dave, Curt and Kenny of Searsboro, and Duane and Glenn of Grinnell; one brother, Earl Davis of Malcom and one sister, Farrell Dayton of New Sharon; 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
His parents; two sons, Danny Ray and Bert L. “Bertie” Phipps; five brothers, Glen, Dale, Clyde, and Ray Phipps and Albert Davis; one grandchild, Robert Phipps; and one great-grandchild, Kelsie Yoakum, preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bert L. Phipps Memorial Fund.
