Elizabeth Matthews dies on Friday; Services Tuesday

BAXTER - Mrs. Elizabeth Matthews, 97, of Baxter, died Friday at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Baxter.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church in Ira.

The Rev. James Pemble, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Union Chapel cemetery near Mingo.

Memorial contributions to the United Church of Ira will be accepted.

Boyd-Davis Funeral Home in Baxter is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are two sons, John of Glendale, Calif., and Robert of Baxter; a daughter, Elizabeth Amomi Matthews of New York City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosa Henning of Baxter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother in infancy.

Mrs. Matthews was a member of the United Church of Ira and the Sandhill Sunshine Club.

She had taught school in Independence Township and during World War II was a nurse in a Veterans Hospital in Chicago, Ill.

The daughter of George and Barbara Henning, she was born Nov. 15, 1884 in Ira, attended Jasper County schools and the University of Northern Iowa at cedar Falls.
