Henry H. Smith was born June 18, 1829 in Oswego Co., New York and died in Monroe, Ia., Aug.5, 1902. He moved to Lyndon, Whiteside Co., Ill., in 1845. He was a graduate of Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. ____ naturally of keen observation, by close application to study he came to be a man of superior attainments. He chose as his life work the profession of teacher and from 1823 to 1879 filled the place of teacher and superintendent of schools in a number of cities in Illinois and during this time was also a member of that State Board of Examiners of that state.
On account of his health he was compelled to give up his chosen profession and for twenty years devoted his time to traveling as solicitor for a number of Encyclopedias. Much of this time was spent in Iowa.
During these years he came in personal contact with the boys and girls of his state and by his strong intellectual powers and high moral character wielded an influence for good, the magnitude of which can be revealed only when the record of time is made complete.
He was married in 1854 to Elizabeth M. Deming at Lynden Ill. To this union were born five children, four of whom with the wife of his youth are still living. He came to his home in Monroe last Aug. that he and his wife might spend the remnant of their days near their son Dr. F. L. Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Congregational Church from early manhood, thus giving a long life to service of the Great King, Jesus Christ. He was of a very loving and affectionate disposition and during his brief residence in Monroe by his genial and cheerful manner won his way into the esteem of all who met him.
Another form is silent, Another life’s work done.
The funeral occurred Friday afternoon from the Baptist Church, Rev. Helmick conducting the services. (edge cut off)
