James Gillespie Blaine is Dead

James Gillespie Blaine died at his residence in Washington, at 9 o'clock, last Friday morning. He would have been 63 years old yesterday.

The event was not unexpected, yet the announcement sent a thrill of the profoundest sorrow throughout the land. No man of the present time was more honored, more respected, more loved than he, and no one was ever more worthy. For days the newspapers have been crowded with articles detailing his great services. Men of all shades of political opinions have vied with each other in attributing to him the grandest deeds and noblest qualities. In the halls of Congress, in the busy marts, in the humblest homes, has his memory received the fullest meed of praise, and his death the sincerest expressions of sorrow. His greatness and grandness will live in the hearts of the American people as long as the English language is spoken, and his life and labors be an incentive to all who would serve their country honorably and well. Few men have ever lived whose life history is so well known to the citizens of this nation, and no one who will be more universally mourned. Jas. G. Blaine is dead! The simple announcement brings to the mind of each his great and brilliant services, his pure and noble life, and each heart will feel its own bitterness because the great American citizen is no more. ~ The Newton Journal, Wed 1 Feb 1893.
