James Monroe, 47 of Colfax, died Oct. 9 at home. He had been in poor health the past several years and had grown increasingly despondent the past few weeks when his health failed to improve. Death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was the son of Paul and Marie Hill Monroe. He was married to Barbara Brown at Colfax Aug. 5, 1939. He is survived by his wife, parents, and five children, Stephen, Martha, Sheila, Kirby, and Mark, all at home. ~ Jasper County Tribune, October 11, 2012
