Heart Attack Is Fatal To M. J. Carey, Lawyer
M. J. Carey, 76, lifelong Jasper county resident and well known attorney, suffered a fatal heart attack while eating lunch at the Elks club at 12:30 p.m. today.
Funeral services are pending at Morgan-Loehr Funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Ethel.
Mr. Carey, who was blind, was born and reared in Newton. Admitted to the bar in 1910, he had practiced law in Newton since that time.
He is a former county attorney and was a member of the state, district and Jasper county bar association. He served many years as president of the Jasper County Bar Association.
Mr. Carey was a graduate of Newton high school and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex T. Carey, were among the early pioneers of this county. During his lifetime he has been identified with all the major community projects in Newton and Jasper county and his reputation in the legal profession extended over the state.
Mr. Carey was the senior member of the Carey & Salisbury law firm in Newton. He and Mrs. Carey lived at 309 West Second street South.
A member of the Sacred Heart Catholic church, Mr. Carey was prominent in the Knights of Columbus. He was born Oct. 28, 1881.
