Monroe Woman Killed Saturday On Icy Roads
Death rode the highways in Jasper County over the weekend on the wings of the county’s first snowstorm.
Victim of the snow-packed roads was Mrs. Max W. Wheeler, 48, of near Monroe, a resident of Jasper County for the past 23 years.
Mrs. Wheeler was dead on arrival at Skiff Memorial Hospital after a collision Saturday morning on Route 14, a short distance north of Monroe. The car in which Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler were riding collided head-on with one driven by Howard L. Cupples of Country Club Acres, Newton. The collision occurred as both cars were rounding a curve in the road, headed in opposite directions.
Mr. Wheeler was badly injured in the accident and is reported in critical condition at Skiff. Cupples was uninjured.
The fatal collision was one of a rash of highway mishaps which kept law enforcement officials and wreckers busy around the clock from the start of the storm Friday night.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wheeler will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Monroe United Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. Charles White, minister of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Monroe Cemetery.
Crumpacker Funeral Home at Monroe is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Norma) Parr of Monroe and Arlene Ruth Wheeler at home; and three brothers, Dick and Dan Rietveld of Otley and John Rietveld of Pella.
Mrs. Wheeler attended the Monroe United Presbyterian Church.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick R. Rietveld, she was born Nov. 7, 1913 north of Pella in Marion County.
She was married to Max W. Wheeler July 30, 1938. A resident of Jasper County for 23 years, she resided east of Monroe for the past 15 years.
