Krampe, Hans Henry – 1824-1905

Last Saturday, at about 11:30 a.m. Henry Krampe, Sr., died at his home in this palce. He was an old resident of the county and was aged about 81. Funeral service was held from the house Tuesday at 10 o’clock. An obituary notice of this estimable old gentleman will appear in next week’s New Era.

Hans Henry Krampe
Hans Henry Krampe was born September 21, 1824, in Hohenhausen, Lippe Detmold, Germany and died in Baxter, Iowa, October 28, 1905, his age being 81 years, 1 month, 7 days.
He came to America in 1851, living at Johnsonville, Wisconsin, for sixteen years, and from thence came to Jasper county, settling on a farm two and a half miles southeast of Baxter. The last ten years of his life he resided in Baxter. He was married to Louisa Silwold in 1853. To them were born six children, four of them living: Henry, Simon, Minnie and August, all of them living in Baxter and vicinity; Fred and Louisa being dead. His wife died a number of years ago. He leaves two brothers, Fred and Cort, and two sisters: Mrs. Fred Boedeker and Mrs. Menke, of Nebraska.
Mr. Kampe was one of the first pioneers of Wisconsin, and one of the founders of the German Reformed church in Johnsonville. In Baxter, his was one of the first eight families who founded the German Reformed church at this place, and was deacon of both congregations for forty years.
His illness began about a year and a half ago, during which time he was tenderly cared for by his daughter, Minnie, and the three sons. Funeral service was held at the German Reformed church, Tuesday, October 31. The Rev. Scheidt officiating, assisted by Rev. Wittenberg. There was a large number of people present – the church being crowded. In the procession there were nearly one hundred teams. The remains found sepulcher at the German Reformed church cemetery.
Mr. Krampe was a broad-minded, public- spirited citizen. He was an excellent neighbor, a devoted husband and a kind father, and in all his dealings was a soul of honor. The world was made better by his having lived in it. Peace to his ashes.
