Wayne Shutts, 81

Harold Wayne Shutts, this son of Charles Elwood and Edna Mae Youngkin Shutts, was born at the family farm home Southwest of Sully on March 9, 1918. He attended the Dairy Grove Country Grade School near there and then Sully High School in Sully for two years.

His formal education terminated when his father died at the age of 48 years and he began farming the family farm with his mother and sister. On December 24, 1940 he and Wanda Maxine Rebertus, the daughter of John and Ida Hurwitz Rebertus, were united in marriage at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Kellogg.

Together they continued Farming the Century Farm until he encountered a heart problem which forced him to retire in 1980. Farming always was and continued to be a way of life for Wayne. In 1987 they purchased a summer home on Lake Ponderosa at Montezuma. They were living there when Wayne passed away. His death came shortly after being admitted to the Pella Regional Health Center on Sunday morning, April 11, 1999, following a four-year battle with cancer. Wayne attained the age of 81 years, one month and two days.

Wayne leaves his sister, Maxine; his sister, Vivian and her husband Delmer Vander Pol of Lynnville; his two nieces; four great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great niece and nephew, all to mourn his passing. They and their families are: Marilyn and her husband, Robert Van Soelen of Killduff, and their two children: Becky and Kevin Roose; Gregory and Kathy Van Soelen and their two children: Madeline and Keaton; Peggy Huyser of Pella and her twins: Suzanne Huyser and Chad Huyser and his wife, Valerie; and a special friend and "Little Brother" Harold Nichless and his wife, Kathy, of Keosauqua.

Wayne's extended family included a great aunt, Mrs. Marion (Glen) Youngkin of Winston sale, NC; his four God children: Marilyn Van Soelen, Peggy Huyser, Robert Rebertus and David Rebertus; along with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; several other nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents: his father who died in 1938 and his mother who died in 1974; his stepfather, Thomas Earl Coakley who died in 1966; and a great-great-nephew, Christian Van Soelen who died in infancy. Wayne enjoyed his nieces and nephews. He was a faithful member of the St. Andrews Lutheran Church near Sully where he served on the Council, sang in the Church choir, and was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau; the Sully Cooperative Exchange and the Sully Telephone Association in Sully; and the Lake Ponderosa Association at Montezuma. Besides farming, Wayne loved nature, hunting and fishing.

Funeral services were held April 14 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Sully. Rev. Robert Waters, officiating and River H. Eugene Cederholm, assisting. Becky Roose was the pianist and Kevin Roose was the soloist. Gertrude Schnell was the organist.

Casket Bearers were Gregory Van Soelen, Chad Huyser, Robert Rebertus, Harold Nichless, Larry Hendricks, and Robert Simmons.

Interment was held at the St. Andrew's Cemetery. memorials may be designated for St. Andrew's Lutheran Church or Hospice of Poweshiek County at Montezuma. ~ The Diamond Trail News, April 28, 1999
