Ruth V. (Leonard) Herbold, 95, of Newton died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at her home in Park Centre in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf, pastor of the church, officiating. The family will greet friends with a coffee time following services at the church. A private family burial will be held at the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Dollars for Scholars for the Newton Community Schools or to the First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be left at the church on the day of service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
The daughter of James and Minnie (Dales) Leonard, Ruth was born Oct. 30, 1915, in rural Jasper County. She was united in marriage to Alan M. Herbold on Jan. 15, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa.
Ruth was a graduate of Colfax High School in 1932 and attended Simpson College. Ruth received her bachelors of science degree in education from Drake University in 1970. Ruth was a grade school teacher in country schools and then for the Newton Community School District and a farmer.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past president of PEO Chapter BA, Newton Chapter No. 100 Order Eastern Star, Jasper County Farm Bureau, Friendship Force, Retired Teachers and a 4-H leader for many years.
Ruth loved her family and never missed any of her children’s or grandchildren’s activities, she was an avid bridge player, and she enjoyed traveling. She moved into Newton from her farm in rural Newton in 1995.
Ruth is survived by three daughters, Lenis (Karl) Brown of Sussex, Wis., Janet Johnson of Newton and Martha (David) Clement of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Brent (Deborah) Brown of Park Ridge, Ill., Brad Brown of Racine, Wis., R. Scott (Stacey) Johnson of Des Moines, Stephanie (Ryan) Wynne of Clive, Julie Johnson of Windsor Heights, Matthew (Regina) Clement of Jefferson City, Mo., and Clint (Misty) Clement of Auburn, Ga.; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua and Samantha Brown, Anna and Robert Johnson, Alysun, Matthew and Scott Wynne, Michael and Alex Clement and Tag Clement; and two nephews, Dr. Larry (Jane) Herbold of West Des Moines and James Herbold of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alan; son-in-law, R. Steven Johnson; and sister and brother-in-law, Lanita and E. O. Herbold.
